Just to copy/paste from the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on the FP:

Tesla isn’t actually insuring cars under this scheme, they’re merely !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on State National Insurance’s policies.

Also, per the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! over on Reddit, people are getting rate quotes from Tesla/SNI that are 1-3 times what other companies are charging, with double the deductible:

I got onto the article late, so the comment is  bu ried, but I think it’s important more people see this info

First they have the audacity start making their own cars, then their own chargers and now their own insurance? Where does this end?!1!?

I’ve always said Tesla is the Apple of the automotive world, this just proves it. Why go with what works when you can go with proprietary ?

Based on my experience with insurance industry folks this is the best move Tesla’s made so far. The managers I’ve met are constantly going on trips, to games, and to dinners all on the company dime. It’s nauseating to think about how much money these companies must be making to foot the bill for all that and be like, “yea, that’s totally fine”.

I wonder what the difference between a Tesla rate and a State National Insurance rate would be.

LOL, nice. They never got the memo that vertical integration was a bad idea.

Actually, it’s kind of funny because today it’s all about “ecosystems” which is basically vertical integration. For decades that was considered an unprofitable approach in the long run. But just look at Apple and Amazon, who I’m sure Tesla is emulating in many ways. Even when it’s fake (like slapping your name on something you don’t even do) .

Really the difference in coverage is that, using telematics and 4G networks,  the Tesla Insurance Plan can drop you from coverage up to 20 milliseconds prior to the collision.
